Breastfeeding Week celebrated Aug. 1-7

The United States will celebrate World Breastfeeding Week August 1-7. August is set aside each year in Minnesota to raise awareness of the many benefits of breastfeeding. The 2008 theme for World Breastfeeding Week is Mother's Support: Going for Gold.
The stress buster that lasts for years

Breast-feeding offers a host of benefits to both mother and baby, including a stronger immune system for the baby and faster weight loss for mom. There are even some known psychological benefits from breast-feeding, such as a stronger parent-child bond.
Lounge a big help for moms

Less than an hour after the nursing mothers' lounge opened Thursday at Citadel Mall, Dana Keith made a beeline toward the cozy room with her 5-month-old baby and 2-year-old in tow. Keith and her husband were visiting Charleston from Port Royal when they saw the sign outside the mall announcing the new lounge.

- Breastfeeding makes for good business: Studies show that women who work full time breast-feed less often and for shorter periods than those who don't. According to a report by the Sloan Work and Family Research Network at Boston College, 45 percent of women working when their babies were 4 months old breast-fed, compared with 65 percent of women not working with a 4-month-old. At six months, the number for nonworking mothers had dropped to 35 percent and for working mothers to 25 percent.
